Motorcycles & Accidents

The thought of being involved in a motorcycle accident, is a reality in which all riders must confront every time we get on our motorcycles. Even the most careful riders will, without a doubt, eventually be confronted with a negligent driver. The injuries suffered on a motorcycle are always more serious and life threatening than any other vehicle on the highway.

The DMV (along with various state agencies and community organizations) routinely conduct classes, seminars and produce literature on ways to effectively protect yourself while riding a motorcycle.

Below is list of safety measures every rider should consider:

used Harley DavidsonA helmet is the single most important piece of safety equipment any rider can wear. Most  states require helmet use by any rider or passenger on a motorcycle. Studies have shown that the use of a helmet can dramatically reduce the risk of fatal motorcycle accidents due to head and neck injury. In fact, the DMV notes the use of a helmet reduces the risk of a head or neck injury by three times. When choosing a helmet, make sure that it is approved by the Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) D.O.T. approved full-face helmets are considered safer and reduce ambient wind noise, fatigue, and protect your eyes.

Padded glasses and/or goggles protect your face and eyes from debris, wind, dirt, rain, insects and gravel/rocks flying off the tires of cars or trucks next to you. A face shield, glasses or goggles, will allow you to ride worry free from hazards which can severely impair your vision.

Riding gloves will help your grip, protect your hands from flying debris, reduce fatigue and keep your fingers warm. Depending on the style you purchase, most motorcycle gloves have protective reinforcements which will help decrease the chances of injuries to your hands in case of an accident. The most popular motorcycle gloves are leather with light padding in the palms.

Properly fitted clothing is a must as it will prevent fatique and road derbis from becoming a distraction. They also provide comfort and warmth during your motorcycle ride. There are special leather motorcycle jackets and outfits that provide maximum snug fit and protection for the riders. A leather jacket is almost always recommended as the toughness of the material provides protection for the rider.

Boots or hard sole sturdy shoes are also recommended. Most riders choose the wear a high rise boot to protect their ankles and provide more support. Boots should not have a high heel or laces (which can be very dangerous).

Aside from the safety gear, it is important to properly maintain your new or used motorcycle on a regular basis. Check for tire & brake deficiencies as well fluid levels. Make sure you properly understand all the controls are and how to use them on your particular motorcycle.

Motorcycle are involved in accidents most often with other cars and or trucks. The number one reason other drivers give is that they never saw the motorcycle. Always practice extreme caution and defensive driving skills while riding your new or used motorcycle. Make sure other drivers can see you in their mirrors.

Finally, take a rider safety course. Did you know that the majority of  bikers involved in motorcycles accidents (no matter who’s fault it is) are self taught and have never taken a rider safety course?

Most states offer inexpensive safety riding courses which can last 2 to 3 days. Many programs even provide a motorcycle for you and upon completion of the course, most insurance carriers will offer a discount to your rate.
