Rolling Steadfast & Resolute
It was only a short time ago that highly talked about, Intrepid Cycles broke onto the bike industry scene when they arrived at the Easyriders V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati to debut a pair of new custom production sleds with names that sounded more like World War II British war ships than motorcycles. Intrepid’s pro-street model, dubbed the ‘Steadfast’ and their long, mean, chopper model, the ‘Resolute’ quickly got people talking. (Later they would go onto add another pony to their stable, 'The Snub Nose', a 111" Twin Cam rigid roller.) With the production-custom motorcycle market continuing to be a very crowded field and as of late at times, lacking innovation, Intrepid Cycles’ timing back then couldn’t have been better. Henceforth, company principals, Mike McGinley and Don Biron rode into the dead sea of the production-custom business, all ‘steadfast and resolute' and now, packing a 'Snub Nose'. But for now, let's look at the 2008 Intrepid Resolute Chopper.
Intrepid’s 2008 Resolute Chopper has an impressive list of power train pedigrees including a Baker RSD 6-speed transmission, Primo Rivera Brute III Extreme primary, and the aforementioned T-series S&S mill. The Resolute comes standard with an S&S Super G, and while the S&S VFI is available as an option, the Super G setup lacks for nothing; start-up is quick and sure and throttling manners are responsive and linear. The 111” motor is a potent performer, producing in excess of 100 hp and providing a G-force lunge when the throttle is rolled. It does, however, also produce a steady buzz of vibration; never enough to shake your feet off the pegs or numb your forearms, but enough to render the bike’s small rearview mirrors blurry at virtually any speed.
The big surprise, here? That 54 degree rake! Now 54 degrees of rake should make for a front end that’s a real floppy mess to wield around, particularly at slow speeds and in tight maneuvers, such as parking lots. Even considering that six of those degrees are built into the triple trees, the remaining 48 degrees in the steering head are extreme by any conventional standard. So imagine your surprise when you discover the Resolute to be a capable handler in congested traffic, taking turns predictably with no perceptible tendency to flop. Intrepid attributes the bike’s slow-speed stability to the fork brace cinching the fork tubes just aft of the fender, but that’s a tough sell technically. But more simply put, Intrepid Cycles crew did their homework and got the bike’s geometry right. It's really amazing how well this chop handles for the size frame, rake and tires.
The 2008 Resolute sports a nasty, meaty 300mm Avon rear tire which can be a limiting factor in the bike’s handling, as it is in any such application. This is why it’s so important to have confidence in the front end’s behavior so you can concentrate on the rear. On wide open straight-a-ways, that big rake, long wheelbase and fat skin translate to rock-steady, “look-Ma-no-hands” motoring. What really helps in this regard is the boys at Intrepid Cycles went with a fat 120-21” Avon instead of a 21” pizza cutter up front. Smart. As for fit to finish, it’s strong throughout, with lots of chrome and a comfortable seat. The wiring is well done and thought out too and capped off with a full read-out Dakota digital gauge that’s mounted right in the center of the handle bars.
All and all, Intrepid Cycles' Resolute is traditional chopper with architecture taken to a radical extreme. The result is a real long, mean eye-popper on the boulevard while practical ergonomics and a big boy motor make for heart-racing, high-speed rips across the landscape, especially for moderate-sized riders. All told, a truly unique and appealing package. List price on the Intrepid Resolute Chopper is around $33,900. Visit their website for more info: www.intrepidcycles.com
