The Ural Motorcyle Company
 Did something really cool looking recently catch your eye? If so, you may have noticed an ad for The Ural Motorcycle Company. This Russian based motorcycle company seems to be much more aggressive lately with their marketing. Or perhaps Ural is just trying to capture some of the very hot, 'retro motorcycle market' that other motor companies like Indian, Triumph and Harley-Davidson are focusing on. Either way, Ural Motorcycles need not to worry. They are and always have been a unique blend of old and new or, if you prefer, classy and rugged. Ural Motorcycles are essentially Russian copies of the old BMW R71. On their website, you’ll find a couple of different stories explaining Ural's possible origins. For example, one states that 5 BMW R71’s were secretly purchased and then reverse engineered for use by the Russian army during WWII. True or not, the end result is the Ural Motorcycle. An old BMW built brand new and ready for whatever may come it's way.  So overall, Ural Motorcycles are variations on the original BMW theme. Except for their new two-wheeled model called 'The Wolf'. (Which is the Ural engine in a new frame. Every other Ural model is sold as the company's mainstay, a sidecar rig.) Two Ural Motorcycle models are in their ‘family group’, (The Ural Retro & The Ural Tourist) and two models are in their ‘sport utility group‘, (The Ural Patrol & Ural Gear-Up). The sport utility group models have the ability to engage a driveshaft for the sidecar wheel giving the rider the traction of dual-wheel drive with just a flip of a lever. This gives the Ural extra traction in off-road or very poor road conditions. It’s ‘four-wheeling’ with only three wheels. It’s a really cool feature and what you would expect in an old military motorcycle. The camo-painted Ural Gear-Up is marketed towards the outdoorsman in all of us, who loves to play in the rough. One big advantage the Ural Gear-Up has over a conventional ATV … You can ‘drive’ the Ural Gear-Up to the woods. The ATV you must trailer.  Now, if you’re just looking for a classic-looking motorcycle with a sidecar that won't break the bank with a retro look, then The Ural Tourist is the ticket. Equipped with leading link forks, both electric and kick start, an electronic ignition and a roomy trunk. The Ural Tourist is an easy and affordable way to enter the world of sidecar motorcycles. From a family ride to a picnic, to a trip to the supermarket, or even as Fido's chariot, you'll be amazed by the versatility and fun of this head-turning rig. Is your nick-name ’Old-Skool’? Then The Ural Retro just might be for you. The Ural Retro has the look of motorcycling forgotten, but with many modern amenities afforded by today’s technology. It’s a cool, classic looking machine begging for the open road. One thing you need to know about Ural Motorcycles, these bikes are not built for speed. Although they can keep up with traffic on the highway, their top speed is only around 65mph. But, without a doubt, there is a certain rugged, tough, fun appeal to these sidecar rigs.
